Karsh at the Tom Blau Gallery

Farouk Campbell

The works of Yousuf Karsh of Ottawa, the world renown portrait photographer who died earlier this year at 93, are on show at the Tom Blau Gallery.

Karsh's signature technique of using chiaroscuro reveals fine close-up details of his famous celebrity cliental and shows deft controlled use of light and shade. Contrasting these images are his more experimental “snapshots” and his playful surreal works of photographing nude figures distorted through the medium of glass. Karsh's works are emblematic delineating strong poses, crisp detail and hints of the Quattrocento. The portraits of Grey Owl, Jacques Cousteau and Edward Stiechen are amongst my favorites. All works are for sale including the famous Winston Churchill portrait.

• At the Tom Blau Gallery until Saturday 19 October
