A woman was seriously injured in York Road on Friday morning when an air-conditioning unit fell on her head while she waited at a bus stop.
Police cordoned off busy York Road in Waterloo soon after the incident happened at 9.10am.
The air ambulance was sent to the scene but the injured woman was taken to King's College Hospital by road ambulance, even though the incident took place just yards from St Thomas' Hospital's A&E department.
Early reports suggest that the air conditioning unit may have fallen from a crane at the Prospect House building site near the junction of York Road and Leake Street.
The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation.
