Pero at the Unicorn Theatre

Sarah O'Connell and Orla Hanks

Whether you are an adult or child, the Speeltheatre Holland's Pero is well worth seeing.

Pero at the Unicorn Theatre

It is not easy to describe a performance that delivers a fast paced mix of opera and puppetry with bags of talent, humour and affection. But that is what you get.

If "children's theatre" sounds a bit worthy, with an echo of trips to the theatre with the school, then think again. The Unicorn is not only delivering great adaptations of good contemporary children's literature (Michael Murpurgo, Eva Ibbotson, Anne Cassidy) but providing a stage for performance and theatre from across the world.

Pero comes from a very different modern European theatre, and a chance for exiled Europeans and students of theatre to see something quite special. Orla started by looking perplexed and then got caught up with the sheer zaniness and talent to the extent that she wants to visit a second time with her best friend. My best advice to bored accountants in More London is to take an hour before starting the journey home to be entertained at the Unicorn. And SE1 residents of all ages, if they have not done so already, should discover this wonderful and rare local resource.

Orla says: "Pero an exciting but funny puppets play. Very well done with a love seeking twist to it and very entertaining suitable for 6+. Good for kids to adults who like a laugh and some very good entertainment."
