The Scarecrow and His Servant at Southwark Playhouse

James and Isabel Chapman

This imaginative and funny adventure begins when a scarecrow suddenly comes to life in a thunderstorm.

The Scarecrow and His Servant at Southwark Playhouse

He meets Jack, a boy, who agrees to become his personal servant and a weird and wonderful journey then begins. Together they set off on their travels and meet a cast of amusing, eccentric characters including brigands, a pantomime horse and an array of birds- all played by three actors.

The production is filled with action, lively songs and dances and a lot of humour. The two main characters are brilliantly played and extremely engaging, the plot is surprising and imaginative and we particularly loved the Farmer who couldn't finish his sentences.

It is advertised as being for all the family aged 7 and up and we would agree that it is a lot of fun for both adults and children. On the night we were there the children were clearly entranced. Just a note that is is nearer two hours than the 90 minutes advertised, though that includes an interval.
