Tate Modern’s first birthday

The day before there will be a small celebration party attended by representatives of those who have found jobs at the Tate and local residents who have experienced the enormous change in the area. Tate Modern shop has already won the Retail Launch of the Year Award for "innovation, originality, excellence and imagination".

May 2000 will also be remembered for the Queen's official opening of the unfinished Millennium Bridge. Who would have imagined that a year later, full public access to the bridge would still be more than six months away?
