£1.24 million day surgery theatre opens at Guy's

A brand new day surgery theatre has opened at Guy's Hospital allowing more patients to be able to choose to have an operation and return home on the same day.

The £1.24 million facility increases the number of operations Guy's can offer to patients needing treatment for conditions such as trapped nerves in the hand and loose cartilage tissue.

Pat McNulty, Head of Nursing for Perioperative Medicine, says: "More operations than ever before can be performed as day cases, including less simple operations. Patients often find day surgery more convenient.

"Although there are sometimes reasons why some patients need to stay in hospital after their operation, the new day surgery theatre means that where appropriate, we can offer patients greater choice and bring down waiting times."

The new theatre is just one of the ways in which waiting times are being tackled. Other recent developments have included holding evening and weekend operating lists and opening a new, six-bed recovery unit to care for extra patients seen during these times.
