The store which opens this spring is opposite Waterloo Station, between Sandell Street and The Cut. The supermarket will be a 'Sainsbury's Local' brand with long opening hours.
The shop is opening almost thirty years after Sainsbury's closed it Stamford Street branch to the public claiming that there was no demand.
Delighted staff at the next door office in Waterloo Road said that they "had hung out the flags" when they heard the news. Others have expressed relief that it is in the main road and nearer for commuters than Iceland at the west end of Lower Marsh. Iceland is open until 8pm but Sainsbury's is planning to be open much later.
Another Sainsbury's Local in Borough High Street opens in the summer.
