Borough Market crowd sings Hosanna!

Marion Marples

Borough Market became the Mount of Olives and Southwark Cathedral represented Jerusalem for the Borough's Palm Sunday procession.

There was a large crowd in Borough Market for the Blessing of Palms at the start of Holy Week.

Cathedral Sub Dean Andrew Nunn blessed the palms held by each person present. After the reading of the Gospel account of the first Palm Sunday, the procession of clergy, choir and people made its way to the cathedral singing hymns along Bedale Street and Cathedral Street..

The Sung Eucharist which followed had a packed congregation. Later this week all Southwark Diocesan clergy will be at the Cathedral for the Chrism Eucharist. On Maundy Thursday evening the Lord's Supper Eucharist will be followed by a candlelit watch recalling Christ's wait in the Garden of Gethsemane.

During Good Friday's Three Hour Service starting at 12 noon there will be an alternative Good Friday Workshop for Children.

At dusk on Saturday, Easter Eve, the Bishop of Southwark will light the Easter Candle at the start of the Easter Vigil.
