Shadow Chancellor Michael Howard came to the South Bank on Thursday afternoon to announce his candidacy for the leadership of the Conservative Party in one of the oak-panelled rooms of the Saatchi Gallery in County Hall.

He was greeted by cheers and applause from Conservative activists who had gathered for the announcement in the former home of the Greater London Council, famously abolished by the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher.
County Hall now houses two hotels, the Saatchi Gallery, London Aquarium, the Dali Universe, Namco Station, the London Eye ticket office, several restaurants and the studio for Terry Wogan and Gaby Roslin's daily TV show for Five.
