News of the former culture secretary's mishap was revealed by Arts London News, the newspaper produced by London College of Communication students.

Lord Smith of Finsbury visited the LCC at Elephant & Castle on Tuesday give a guest talk to students.

"As he was waiting at the gates of the car park for the new £29,000 automatic barriers to lower to allow access, a cyclist slipped through and triggered the bollards to come up again, right under Chris's car," Steve Cross, course director of BA Media and Cultural Studies, told ALN.

According to the newspaper's report, a recovery lorry was called to remove the car and the matter is now in the hands of Lord Smith's insurance company.
