Prefabricated bathroom pods for a new housing development at Elephant & Castle are being assembled 3,400 miles away in Dubai.
The completed bathroom pods will be shipped from the United Arab Emirates to Tilbury Docks before being delivered to the construction site in Elephant Road.
Details of the use of off-site fabrication on the development provisionally known as 'Elephant One' have been revealed in a newsletter published by contractors Laing O'Rourke.
The newsletter also reports that the next stage of the structural frame – including concrete columns, floors and walls – will be constructed in a factory near Worksop and assembled on-site as a kit of parts.
Mechanical and electrical services modules for the new buildings are being produced in Wolverhampton.
Owners Delancey recently dropped the controversial Tribeca Square branding for the development which will include a full-size Sainsbury's supermarket, a cinema, shops, student accommodation, more than 250 homes and a market square.
