Results from the archaeological trial pit dug next to the Rose Theatre site revealed a ditch marking the eastern boundary of the plot. This indicates that the entire Little Rose Estate is potentially available for excavation.
Also discovered were timber planks and posts lining the ditch.
Visiting the site, arts minister Baroness Blackstone said: "The Rose Theatre is an important part of our cultural history. I very much welcome this trial dig which could shed important light on the history of Elizabethan theatre, one of Britain's greatest contributions to world culture."
