New shopping centre on the South Bank?

The South Bank’s Shell Centre has applied for planning permission to create a new shopping centre at the foot of its building.

The shops would include a supermarket as well as cafes. The plan follows a review of local needs and a recent consultation.

The leisure facilities will include a fitness club. There are also plans to relocate the listed Franta Belsky fountain within the site.

At present over 2,200 people work in the Shell Centre.

A new £50,000 children's playground for under-fives as well as older children, partly funded by Shell, has opened in nearby Jubilee Gardens.`
