Developers Frontier Estates have revealed plans to build a hotel on the site of the former Ticino Bakery in Bermondsey Street.
"We have been working with local architects Hall McKnight to prepare proposals for a replacement building on this site, which will provide a new restaurant and boutique hotel, with a design that would complement and add to the vitality of Bermondsey Street," wrote Frontier Estates's Noel Carter in a letter to local residents.
Frontier is proposing to replace the three-storey bakery with a four-storey hotel.
Last year we reported that the Ticino Bakery building – one of the last industrial premises in the area – was up for sale with an asking price of £4.5 million.
A Bermondsey Street fixture for more than three decades, Ticino played a key role introducing hitherto unknown Italian breads such as ciabatta to London shops and restaurants.
The story is told in the film Bermondsey Street: A London Story out now on DVD.
