Southwark Council is planning a £5 million contribution to London South Bank University's new institute to support students following technical or vocational qualifications and higher apprenticeships.
London South Bank University is planning to turn the former Passmore Edwards Library in Borough Road into the Passmore Centre, which will be the home for the new Institute of Professional and Technical Education.
The £5 million contribution from the council was included in the updated capital programme approved by Southwark's cabinet last week.
The council claims that backing the LSBU proposal will help it meet its commitment to the creation of 2000 apprenticeships in line with the authority's plan for a “strong economy” in the borough.
