A team of five community wardens, wearing highly visible red and black uniforms, is patrolling Bankside and the Pool of London.

The scheme is jointly funded by Southwark Council, Better Bankside and the Pool of London Partnership.

"We are delighted to be instrumental with our partners in introducing this warden scheme" says a spokesperson for Better Bankside. "It fits well with what our businesses have been telling us the area needs.

"As a key element of our clean, green and safe themes we see the wardens as one of the core services to be provided through our business improvement district."

The wardens, who have undertaken an intense training programme which includes first aid, intend keeping a watch on environment issues. Overflowing bins and graffiti will be noted fand reported direct to the council department whilst it is hoped that anti-social behaviour can be reduced by working alongside the police.

The southern boundary for the 7-day a week patrols is Union Street.
