Gas leak on the Old Kent Road leads to travel chaos

London SE1 website team

Bus and car travel is being disrupted by the closure of Old Kent Road for emergency repairs to a gas main - and the chaos could last up to two weeks.

Transco have told Bankside Press that the leak in a 30" main was reported on Tuesday 6 April and the emergency work is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.

"Due to the location of the pipe in the centre of the road, and to ensure a safe working area for our engineers on site, it has been necessary to close Old Kent Road from the junction of East Street to Albany Road" said a spokeswoman for the company. "Local diversions are in place and this will be the case until all repair works are completed."

Where possible engineers will also carry out night working to ensure the works are completed on time.

The spokeswoman added: "Transco is sorry for any inconvenience this essential work may cause and would like to thank motorists for their patience and cooperation."
