Family Bankside Tour

This event is in the past. This is an archive page for reference.

Bankside has a rich and colourful history. Starting life as a Roman settlement on the other side of the City of London, it became the home to the Bishops of Winchester. It was also a space of entertainment, best known as the home of Shakespeare's Globe and the theatres ran by his contemporaries.

Already a space for the smelly trades such as soup making and brewing, the area became more industrialised. It is only in the last 20 years that it has become the space we recognise today.

The walk will stop at various locations including the ruin of one of London's riverside palaces, the site of Southwark's famous Clink prison, St Mary Overy Dock, and the sites associated with Shakespeare.
