This is the first retrospective to focus exclusively on the paintings of the great Los Angeles- based artist Ed Ruscha (b. 1937), one of the most influential and pioneering American artists of the past half-century. Alternately categorised as a Pop artist, a conceptualist, a realist and a latter-day surrealist, Ruscha defies easy categorisation.
This major exhibition reveals the depth and breadth of his achievement by bringing into focus the entire sweep of his 50-year output as a painter.
It is curated by Ralph Rugoff, director of The Hayward.
