Bruce Saunders to be cathedral "parish priest"

Canon Bruce Saunders is to be the new Canon Pastor of Southwark Cathedral, taking responsibility for the Cathedral's parish activity.

He will also become Priest-in-Charge of St Hugh's, Charterhouse Mission in Crosby Row which has been transferred into the Cathedral's care. His new job includes helping to ensure that the Cathedral plays its part in the life of the local community.

Bruce Saunders, 56, is already on the staff of the Cathedral. Since 1997 he has been Canon Missioner serving the parishes of Southwark Diocese.

He succeeds Canon Helen Cunliffe who is now Archdeacon of St Albans.

Bruce says: "After six fascinating years thinking and talking and writing about the 21st Century Church's missionary task, I welcome this opportunity of testing what I've learned by returning to a priestly ministry more rooted in the lives of people and communities. The Cathedral and St Hugh's offer huge resources for people seeking God in this exciting and challenging part of London and are signs of God's presence in the city. I hope to help them develop those resources and make them more available to the people who live or work in the communities they serve."

Canon Saunders will be installed at St Hugh's and again at the Cathedral in November.
