Bar and Grill section recommended for lunch
Had lunch in the bar and grill section (not the more formal restaurant) on a Wednesday in mid-May. I had booked in advance and although we were only 2 people, we were given a window-side table with a great view. The service was generally good - and on the odd occasion when it seemed a bit slow, it was easy to get the attention of someone to look after us. The food was nice (not cheap but they do have an express lunch menu if you ask). It was a great place to linger. Perhaps the key to enjoying such an iconic location is to go when it is not busy. I'd definitely repeat the experience, but probably only for a mid-week lunch.
Expensive, small portions and sloppy service
Dinner in the restaurant at Skylon was disappointing. We had booked for 9.00pm but were kept waiting for our table for half an hour. When we finally did order the food arived promptly but portions were minute. nicely presented but unsubstantial. Service, from the rather clueless staff, was not what you would expect for somewhere charging such high prices in such a prime location. For the record we had 2 cocktails each during the wait for our table, 2 starters, 2 mains and one desert, one bottle of wine (Sancerre - £33) and tap water. The bill for 2 was £171. Not worth it im afraid. Oh but the views are nice!
