Jay Jopling's White Cube gallery has revealed its proposals for a new public art gallery in the former Recall warehouse in Bermondsey Street.
White Cube is owned by art dealer Jay Jopling who represents the commercial interests of artists such as Jake & Dinos Chapman, Tracey Emin, Marcus Harvey, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Marc Quinn and Sam Taylor-Wood.
White Cube first opened in Duke Street in 1993 and currently has galleries in Hoxton and Mason's Yard.
The company acquired the former Recall warehouse in Bermondsey Street earlier this year with the intention of using it for storage, but the potential of the space for use as a gallery soon became apparent.
The large single-storey building, with its high roof and good natural light, is likely to become a key fixture on the London art scene.
On Friday White Cube held an open day at the warehouse to show its proposals for the building to local residents.
The warehouse will be subdivided and two gallery spaces will be created in the centre, with storage for artists' work wrapped around the edge of the building. There will also be an auditorium with between 60 and 70 seats.
The large yard at the front of the building will be opened up create a new piazza.
White Cube will soon submit a planning application to Southwark Council.
In 2008 the council rejected a planning application by Oakmayne for a 7-storey residential development on the warehouse site.
• Local residents can learn more about the proposals by visiting the Recall warehouse on Friday 10 December between 1pm and 7pm and on Saturday 11 December between 10am and 2pm.
