The park in Hopton Street near Tate Modern, developed by Better Bankside with the help of the Barclays Cycle Superhighway support package, opened on Tuesday.

"The Bankside Secure Cycle Park is one of the many ways that the Barclays Cycle Superhighway CS7 is encouraging cycle commuting," said Transport for London's capital development head Nigel Hardy speaking at the launch.

"We are delighted to have contributed to its development. Some 114 organisations along CSH route 7 took part in the workplace scheme leading to 1500 additional cycle parking spaces, around 500 people trained and 130 cycle safety check sessions at workplaces. We look forward to seeing Better Bankside's approach copied along other CSH routes."

Cycle Superhighway 7 runs through the Bankside area along Southwark Bridge Road.

Better Bankside chair Donald Hyslop said: "With over ten per cent of Bankside commuters cycling regularly to work, the park is one of a number of initiatives that Better Bankside is taking to meet their needs and support new cyclists.

"Many of our member businesses find allocating space for cycle parking difficult. This is a perfect solution which we hope will be popular with them as well as reducing the threat of cycle theft."

The speakers at the breakfast event were welcomed by Better Bankside travel planning group chair Joanna Foy.

Cyclists are able to try out the cycle park for free in September and enjoy a number of offers, including bike cleaning, a Dr Bike and money off vouchers.

The September offer is available to employees of Better Bankside members. From 1 October to 28 February 2012 the fee is £40.

Better Bankside also offers Bankside employees free cycle checkups, cycle maintenance training sessions and loans of Brompton folding bikes.
