The 1950s banana warehouse at Butler's Wharf which has been the home of the Design Museum since 1989 is up for sale, the museum has announced.
The museum will continue its programme of exhibitions at Shad Thames until its new Kensington home opens in 2014.
The sale is the result of the Design Museum's plans to relocate to the former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington.
The move will give the Design Museum three times more space to show a wide range of exhibitions and showcase its collection.
The Conran Foundation currently owns the lease of the Shad Thames building and has pledged to donate the proceeds from the sale of the lease to the museum's relocation project.
In June the museum said the sale was expected to raise approximately £10 million.
The building is being marketed for sale via Cushman & Wakefield.
