The British Heart Foundation has appealed for volunteers to come forward to help run its secondhand furniture and electrical store in Old Kent Road.
The shop needs 250 hours of volunteer time each week but currently has just half the level of help that it needs.
Nationwide, more than 20,000 give up their time to work in BHF shops and the charity hopes to open another 20 new stores this year.
The BHF is particularly encouraging unemployed local residents to volunteer in its shops as its structured training can be helpful to jobseekers.
Last year BHF furniture & electrical stores awarded 600 NVQs in England and Wales.
"Our volunteers are vital to the work of the BHF and we appreciate every minute people can spare," said area manager Monika Michalczuk.
"We also hope to give something back; in a time of nationwide job cuts BHF Furniture & Electrical Stores are encouraging local people in Old Kent Road to keep their foot on the career ladder and gain some excellent experience. Last year, over 600 paid jobs were created and we hope to repeat that success this year."
The shop offers a wide variety of roles from warehouse and administration to selling, dealing with customer enquiries and arranging house collections. The Old Kent Road Store is also on the look-out for people to help with stock generation in the local area.
