General election 2017: Neil Coyle vs Simon Hughes - round 2

Theresa May's decision to seek a general election on Thursday 8 June has paved the way for a repeat of the contest between Labour's Neil Coyle and Lib Dem veteran Sir Simon Hughes in Bermondsey & Old Southwark.

Sir Simon Hughes is likely to be the Liberal Democrat candidate in this year's general election, seeking to oust the Labour MP who unseated him in May 2015.

Neil Coyle told the BBC on Tuesday: "I hope my electors don't have too short a memory and remember that there was a Lib Dem before who voted for things like the bedroom tax, the hike in tuition fees and didn't vote for equal marriage.

"I think those things will still have salience with many voters."

Having been one of the MPs who nominated Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour leadership in 2015, Coyle is now an outspoken critic of his party leader and this weekend was embroiled in a new internal party row.

Sir Simon Hughes said: "In Bermondsey and North Southwark we are determined to win back the seat from Labour and really clear we can do so.

"Labour, Liberals and Liberal Democrats are the only parties to have won any seats in this area since the second world war, and in June we have as good a chance of winning again as we have ever had.

"Labour are not a credible party of government nationally, and locally Bermondsey and Southwark voters need an MP again who will concentrate on fighting for the people of our borough all the year round rather than spending huge amounts of time on fighting internal battles in the Labour Party."
