The retail park, located on the opposite side of Humphrey Street from the Tesco Southwark superstore, is owned by the Strathclyde Pension Fund.

The current tenants are Argos, Sports Direct, Carpetright and DFS.

DTZ Investors have made a technical submission – an Environmental Impact Assessment scoping opinion request – to Southwark Council in advance of a full planning application.

The submission reveals that architects Pilbrow & Partners have designed a scheme for up to 800 homes on the site, in buildings up to 48 storeys high.

The development will also include a 250-room 16-storey hotel as well as retail space.

'Big box' retail on the Old Kent Road is on the way out as development plans gather pace. Earlier this year plans to replace B&Q, Halfords and Pets at Home with 1,200 homes in buildings up to 48 storeys high were also made public.
