Hundreds of people queued outside the new M&S Foodhall in York Road on Wednesday morning for the chance of getting hold of a 'golden ticket' voucher. Boots has also opened a store at the Southbank Place development.
M&S Foodhall and Boots join Gail's Bakery as the first three shops to open at the redeveloped Shell Centre site on York Road at Waterloo.
"My team and I are really excited about our new store in Southbank Place," said M&S Foodhall manager Derek Stump.
"We'll be working hard to provide outstanding service for the community and the new Foodhall will offer all the everyday essentials, as well as seasonal inspiration and innovation."
All the tills in the new supermarket are self-checkout, with no conventional staffed counters at all.
M&S Southbank Place will also offer the full range of M&S Clothing & Home products via its Collect in Store service. Customers can opt for next day pick up if they order online by 10pm the night before.
M&S Foodhall is open Monday-Saturday 7am to 10pm and Sunday 12 noon to 6pm.
Elsewhere at Southbank Place, the York Road entrance to Waterloo Underground Station – closed since October 2015 – is nearing completion.
Last month the developers of Southbank Place released a report claiming that the development will have contributed close to £1 billion to the UK economy upon completion, with nearly half of the investment spent in Lambeth and London.
