Reviews of 4 Fratelli Caprini Restaurant

I've been to Caprini a few times over the past few years and had dinner there again today. The decor is distinctly 70's, but well maintained and clean. Staff is friendly, food good and price always reasonable. I'd recommend it.

Yesterday, 19th December 07 we decided to have lunch at Caprini in Waterloo Road. It is under the railway bridge and opposite where Ronnie Biggs the great train robber sold flowers from a pavement pitch.

We have known this restaurant for over 25 years, and were worried that it was still open having moved to Hampshire many years ago.

The Caprini is the last of quite a large private owned chain of the same name and this last is presided over by Mr Antunes a Portugese together with an excellent staff.

We need not have worried, it was such a pleasure to settle at our table in the window and to note the clean and tidy retro decor still in place. It has a sense of permanancy.

The Caprini is like so many of those wonderful urban restaurants one finds in Continental cities. No ridiculous here today gone tomorrow, modish styling and trendy presentation. Just dedicated staff, smartly dressed in black and white, traditional waiting outfits. The polished wood, staircase and metal work all transporting one to Rome, Palma, Lisbon or Madrid.

The Caprini is a fast disappearing breed from London, please ensure you support them.

The 2 course lunch menu is either £5.95, £6.95 or £7.95. Between us we tried the Italian style mussels, Chicken wings, fantastic straightforward shark steaks and vegetarian risotto, which made me a fan of the disk immediately. With a good bottle of Valpolichello and nibbles and mineral water the bill was £54.00 for 3.
The special at £5.95 would be more than enough ordinarily.

Caprini was handy as we arrived at Waterloo on the way to the Festival Hall,also near Tate and Old Vic for evening meals.

This restaurant offers "old school" Italian restaurant cooking - nothing here is drizzled. You can still get dishes like escalope and spaghetti, which may not appeal to all tastes, but there is also some very good cooking of fresh ingredients.

The menu and the presentation at the Caprini don't seem to have changed in the sixteen years I have known it (and it looks as though they hadn't changed much in the twenty years prior to that).

The prices have gone up, but this remains good value compared with alternatives so close to the South Bank arts venues - the clientele includes the more mature concert goer who can be seen perusing their Eulenburg miniature score between courses.
