Terrible service and he seemed to be the manager
Well I have used Cafe vergnano before and it's a cafe where you will receive attention and service when it's quiet. However on a busy Friday night I had to deal with a manager who seemed to not want to give us a table for 2 and rejected us and then herded 4 people behind us onto the table whilst pulling spare chairs to use.

I said what about serving us he actually said go away. Obviously serving 2 instead of 4 is more profitable. I asked him for a business card and he forced it into my hand just to add to the sense of not being welcome. Then he pushed us out. I suggest you go elsewhere for coffee!!!

A warm and perfect evening
I cannot praise Caffe Vergnano highly enough. We went last Friday evening (March 20th) to celebrate our daughter's engagement and - despite the place being bustling - the service was friendly and really first class. (I've never been to a restaurant before where the head waiter remembered my name throughout the evening).

The food was excellent, beautifully prepared and piping hot. (The lamb was particularly fine). The ambience was delightful.

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and we shall certainly return - whatever the occasion.

Worth the wait? Probably not
It was bad sign that other diners had to put their coats on and stand in order to finally get their bill. We waited 40 minutes for two simple plates of pasta before we just left cash for our drinks and walked out. Others were getting anxious because food was arriving too late for them to get to trains, concerts etc. The staff were completely hopeless, and would respond to questions with a vacant stare. They should perhaps stick to serving coffee as they clearly haven't got a clue about running a restaurant.
Very flawed
Went to Caffe Vergnano tonight for a birthday in the restaurant - I can only advise you to think very carefully if you want to go.

Arrived, and spent 5 minutes waiting whilst the staff studiously ignored us before we got our table.

Then spent another 10 minutes waiting for menus, and actually had to ask the manager for our menus.

Then, had an extraordinarily surly waiter, who redefined rudeness. Our request for non-alcoholic drinks led to us being treated like pariahs.

The food itself was highly variable - the bruschetta needed a pneumatic drill to penetrate the bread, the fillet steak was well cooked otherwise.

The highlight of the evening was watching the manager and our waiter almost come to blows arguing about something in the middle of the restaurant.

We gave up at dessert, to be honest the primary problem seemed to be lack of staffing, poor management and lack of coordination between the waiters.

We have been there for coffee, and it has been very good, but we now feel badly let down by the restaurant.
