New row in mayoral referendum campaign

Former Mayor of Southwark Charlie Cherrill has hit out at a leaflet being circulated by the Yes campaign for a directly elected mayor.

With the referendum due to take place on Thursday 31 January there is concern in the No camp about the claim in the Yes leaflet that a Yes vote will mean that the "civic mayor will be kept".

The claim, say the 'Southwark says No!' campaigners, is incorrect and a contradiction of the position made clear by government minister Nick Raynsford.

Southwark will lose its traditional civic mayor if the majority vote for change.

The leaflet has been issued by businessman Lee Bartlett who is heading the 'Yes for a directly elected Mayor' campaign.
