Detectives have launched a murder investigation after shots were fired near the Ministry of Sound nightclub at Elephant & Castle.

Police believe that shots were fired around Gaunt Street at about 4.15am on Bank Holiday Monday.

A man – believed to be 25 years old – was found dead in the street outside the club. It is thought that he died from head injuries sustained when he was hit by a car.

Detectives believe that the know the identity of the dead man and his relatives have been informed.

A second man, aged 29, was taken by ambulance to a south London hospital, suffering a gunshot wound to his shoulder. His condition is not believed to be serious. He has now been arrested, but remains in hospital.

An incident room has been set up at Lewisham police station under DCI Mark Dunne of the Homicide & Serious Crime Command.

Newington Causeway and Gaunt Street were closed until early evening on Monday.
