WHSmith this week opened a new branch at the Bankside Mix development on Southwark Street but we can reveal that NatWest has abandoned its plan to open a branch.
The new branch of the newsagent and stationery chain opened at 7am on Monday morning. The small store, which is open 7 days a week, is next to Pret a Manger on the Southwark Street side of the Bankside 2 building.
The offices at Bankside 2 and Bankside 3 are occupied by the Royal Bank of Scotland. We can reveal that RBS has backtracked on plans to open a Bankside branch of its NatWest bank.
Earlier this year Southwark Council granted planning permission and advertisement consent for the NatWest signage and installation of ATMs at the new bank.
This summer the 'NatWest opening soon' notices were partially covered up and RBS has now told the London SE1 website that there is "no plan" to open a branch at Bankside Mix.
However NatWest is still featured on the www.banksidemix.co.uk website run by developers Land Securities.
Local rumours that health and beauty chain Boots could be coming to Bankside Mix have also been denied by that company.
