Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg visited the Ministry of Sound nightclub at Elephant & Castle on Tuesday morning to launch his party's local election campaign.
Mr Clegg's speech was introduced by Southwark Lib Dem leader Cllr Anood Al-Samerai.
"The local elections are different for us now, the Euros too," said Nick Clegg.
Bluntly, we are not the protest vote any more. But I have never wanted the Liberal Democrats to be just the 'none of the above' party.
"Everything I have done as leader has been about taking us onto the next stage: making the Liberal Democrats a serious party of government – national and local too."
Mr Clegg insisted that the Lib Dems would "deliver a stronger economy and a fairer society – not one or the other, but both".
The Ministry of Sound's owner James Palumbo has donated to the Lib Dems at national and local level.
He recently joined the House of Lords as a Lib Dem peer, taking the title Lord Palumbo of Southwark.
