Part of Belvedere Road is closed to motor traffic for the next three days whilst the disused footbridge between the Shell Centre and Jubilee Gardens is demolished.
The road was closed early on Monday morning and is due to reopen in time for Thursday morning's rush hour.
Buses on routes RV1 and 77 have been diverted whilst the work is carried out. Access for pedestrians and cyclists has been maintained.
The footbridge – which formed part of a direct link between Waterloo Station and the South Bank – has been closed to the public for several years.
The first phase of homes in the Southbank Place development recently went on sale, with prices up to £4 million.
