The transformation of the Albert Arms has been so tastfully carried out to create a calm, friendly and sociable environment in which to enjoy the excellent range of beers and wines, not to mention the growing list of extremely tasty home made snacks and meals.
A far cry from the dive that used to occupy this corner of Gladstone Street, the pub is a welcoming environment for all ages, which is important given the location, so close to the University.
A lovely touch is the soft classical music which is perfect for small meetings or simply relaxing after a hard day. I cannot wait for the summer when the small garden will be opened up for Sunday lunches.
I feel sure that the Albert is going to become most popular with both locals and visitors alike as word gets around. The owners deserve every success for their continued efforts to bring the perfect 'local' into SE1.
I find Linda and her team super-friendly and nice, and they seem to be taking an extremely professional approach to getting the pub up and running as a sustainable business.
I've seen numerous owners come and go over the years I've lived nearby, and the scale of their investment and hard work give me optimism that they'll make it really thrive again.
I had a delicious platter last time I went, and I'm off there for dinner tonight with friends, and looking forward to their new bigger menu of hot food. Num num.
No connection, other than being a happy customer.
Good and reasonably priced wine list, cosy surroundings and calm music make a really relaxed atmosphere. It's spot on for a gloomy winters evening, the type of pub you can bring a crowd into or just sit with a book on your own. I've always found the staff and owners (who are often working the bar and chatting to regulars)really friendly and chatty if you want to chat or professional if you just want a drink.
The food is really good value also, I recommend the sharing platter!
Only reservation is the cash only bar, it avoids hold ups but the nearest free cash point is ages away so you have to remember the pennies!
Having been there several times, since it re-opened, I've found the following:
• Good beer, well kept
• Good wine
• Great value food
• Classical music played quietly enough to be restful background
• People of many colours and nationalities being treated well by knowledgable and pleasant staff.
Don't go to the Albert if you want fizzy lager, blaring televisions and loud popular music - there's plenty of other choice round here for that - but I've found it a really civilised place.
BTW It's cash only so you don't get that irritation of waiting behind someone who can't be bothered to bring a £10 note into the pub and expects everyone else to wait for them.
Obviously, I wasn't there when the previous reviewer was, so I don't know what happened, but thanks for taking the trouble to create an account to let us know about it Mr Maul.
