Borough Post Office in Borough High Street is to close. It is one of 85 Crown Post Offices to be shut as part of a new strategy announced this week.
This week Post Office Ltd announced plans to close 85 of its 458 Crown Post Offices around the UK. 70 of these will be transferred to nearby WHSmith stores, with a further 15, including Borough, to be transferred to other – as yet unspecified – retail outlets.
A Post Office spokeswoman told the London SE1 website that there is not yet a firm timetable for the closure of the Borough branch.
She said that Post Office Ltd would be approaching businesses and existing franchise partners who may be interested in running a Post Office in the Borough area.
The spokeswoman rejected suggestions that the closure would affect the level of service currently enjoyed by residents and businesses in the Borough. She said that she was "quite confident" that the Post Office would find a partner that could offer "the same level of service" as at present.
The London Bridge Post Office at the northern end of Borough High Street is unaffected by this week's announcement.
Several Crown Post Offices in SE1 have closed in recent years, including the Elephant & Castle and Waterloo Road branches.
In Westminster Bridge Road the Crown Post Office became a Spar convenience store with a small sub Post Office
A major outcry followed the decisions to close the sub Post Offices in Bermondsey Street and Abbey Street.
Last year a new sub Post Office opened in Great Dover Street to replace the New Kent Road branch.
