Council bosses last week visited Elephant & Castle to check on progress with the construction of the new leisure centre and swimming pool.
The new leisure centre was approved last November but the discovery of human remains on the site has pushed the expected opening date back from 2014 to 2015.
"There is significant demand for improved leisure facilities in the area, specifically a swimming pool, which we are well on our way to realising," said Cllr Fiona Colley, Southwark's cabinet member for regeneration.
"The changes can already be seen, and those looking forward to a transformed Elephant & Castle need only watch this space."
Construction company Balfour Beatty is currently on site preparing the ground for the next phase of work.
The new Elephant & Castle leisure centre – designed by S&P architects in partnership with John McAslan – will include a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, learner pool, four court sports hall, gym, exercise studios, creche and cafe.
On the front of the same site Lend Lease is building One The Elephant, a high-rise private residential block designed by Squire & Partners.
