A group of local artists are appealing for people to share their memories of the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre as they prepare a film and model of the building before it is demolished.
The People's Bureau – an arts and skill-sharing project run by Southwark-based artist Eva Sajovic and Southwark-born artist Rebecca Davies – has teamed up with writer Sarah Butler to create a film and a scale model of the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre.
They are looking for local people to help by contributing their memories of the shopping centre over the past 50 years to the project.
Eva, Rebecca and Sarah have made work relating to the Elephant & Castle for more than a decade.
They want to create the film and model to celebrate and commemorate the shopping centre, which will be demolished in the next few years.
"The shopping centre is a very special place – there's a real sense of community there and an informality you don't find in other shopping centres," said Eva.
"We think it's important to document and celebrate the centre's uniqueness before it goes."
Eva and Sarah are asking anyone who is happy to share their memories of Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre to email them at [email protected]
• In March the shopping centre will host a dance performance inspired by memories of the building.
