Eight years after Rob Wray opened the 50-seater Shortwave Cinema in Bermondsey Square, the venue has been sold to Kent and East Sussex-based Kino Digital.

Shortwave Cinema becomes Kino Bermondsey

Shortwave opened in 2009 after Rob Wray had campaigned for a cinema to be included in the Bermondsey Square development.

Shortwave's programming has moved to the mainstream since it opened, in a quest to find a sustainable audience.

The new owners – who have similar small-scale cinemas in Hawkhurst and Rye – say that they are not planning any major changes to the Bermondsey operation.

The Shortwave name will live on in the new Shortwave Cafe Rob is opening this week at the old biscuit factory in Clements Road. Rob has also set up a sister venue called Longwave at the Elephant & Castle.
