After years of speculation it has been confirmed that Sainsbury's is seeking to open a 24-hour convenience store in Bermondsey Square during 2008.
The small store will be the third Sainsbury's Local in SE1, joining the existing Waterloo Road and Borough High Street branches which opened in 2003.
Sainsbury's Supermarkets applied for a premises license for the store at 1 Bermondsey Square on 28 December 2007.
The application shows that the firm intends to open the store 24 hours a day, though alcohol would only be sold between 6am and midnight.
A Tesco Express store opened in Long Lane in October 2007.
The Bermondsey Square development is due to be completed during 2008. As well as an improved setting for the weekly Bermondsey Antique Market, new homes and offices, it will boast a small digital cinema run by Shortwave Films and new restaurants.
The suggestion that a Sainsbury's Local is to open in the square was first discussed on the London SE1 forum in February 2007.
