The new Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Tina Valcarcel, has named the Evelina Children's Hospital on the South Bank as one of the beneficiaries of her charity fundraising during the next year.

Cllr Valcarcel – who has been a member of the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust for more than a decade – described the Evelina Children's Hospital Appeal as "a charity that is very close to my heart".

"The hospital is central to the wellbeing of children, ill and premature babies," she told Lambeth councillors last Wednesday.

"With over 100,000 children requiring medical attention each year, I will be doing my best to raise awareness and raise funds."

The Evelina Children's Hospital Appeal fundraises to provide equipment, furnishings and toys for the hospital on Lambeth Palace Road.

The new Mayor is also supporting Kids Company, the charity which operates in Lambeth and Southwark.

"Kids Company helps many children and young adults who have difficult personal and family histories, enduring homelessness, emotional difficulties and criminal involvement," she said.

"It relies on the generosity of people, and has been enormously successful in empowering children."

Cllr Valcarcel will also raise money for Mosaic Clubhouse in Balham.
