Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper chose the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre as the setting for her speech setting out Labour's immigration policy.
Ms Cooper delivered the speech to an audience of party activists.
She called for "an honest debate; challenging the politics of division and misinformation, but honest about the problems and the need for reform" as well as "stronger enforcement and border controls" as well as new rules to promote integration and prevent division.
Former Lambeth Council leader Steve Reed – now Croydon North MP and shadow Home Office minister – was among those in attendance.
The neighbourhood centre in Stamford Street is a favourite venue for media events for politicians of all three main parties.
